FIT TIP: YOUR LEGS NEED VARIETY
by Kat Cezair, ISSA CPT
We all know the typical leg day routine/exercises- squats, lunges, deadlifts, and leg presses. But by doing these same exercises each leg day, are you helping or hurting your gains?
Now don’t get me wrong, each of those exercises serve their purposes and are pretty non-replaceable in the type of strength they build in your legs. However, continuously performing the same exercises (especially without increasing weight or reps) and lacking workout variety can lead not only to boredom, but your muscles become accustomed and adapt to those movements which can cause you to hit a bit of a plateau in your fitness journey.
I believe in variety.
To me, new exercises mean new muscles as you’re activating and exciting the muscle from a new angle, intensity, or resistance. Confusing the muscles with various training protocols like resistance bands, kettlebells, barbells, bodyweight exercises, and plyometric movements will allow you to train both the large and small muscles in your body while taking your muscles through various ranges of motion to truly increase your body’s mobility, strength, function, and power. There’s also an aesthetic payoff to the new muscles that start coming out to play as you begin activating them through a new routine!
Check out this weeks Leg-Focused Workout of the Week to take your next leg day to a new level! You may be wobbling at the end but I’m sure your future leg gains will thank me ;)
