Flavor of the Week: McCormick’s Garlic and Onion Plus Black Pepper, Sea Salt
by D. Smith
This week's Flavor of the Week is... McCormick's Garlic and Onion plus Black Pepper and Sea Salt. At first glance, I thought WOW! The perfect seasoning once again! It has everything I typically use most often so I was really looking forward to another great one as I dropped this one into my cart.
First taste was with boneless skinless chicken thighs, stir fried with peas and fresh carrot chips. I honestly expected a heavy robust salty, garlic onion flavor for the amount I used, yet it was subtle and mild. The pepper wasn't too sharp and the salt wasn't too salty. I honestly barely tasted salt at all. This was a huge surprise, given the seasoning has this heavy robust look. I thought, perhaps my taste buds were sleeping that day. So... I tried it again.
The second time I put this little bottle to work, I used it with a chicken breast and broccoli slaw stir fry I made to complete Chicken Breast Broccoli Avocado wraps. While the wraps were delicious this definitely was not the best seasoning to use. However, it was a unique flavor that again, was mild and satisfying, but not overly impressive.
So after two consecutive uses, my best thoughts are this is the type of seasoning that's best used in combination with other seasoning rather than as a stand alone. As a stand alone it might taste best on steak, especially in combination with a good healthy steak sauce. Otherwise, this is a great seasoning for sauces, chili, and ethnic foods like Mexican/Latino foods that include and depend heavily on onion and garlic powder.
I obviously have more exploring to do with this little laid back bottle of flavor. Stay tuned... I'm sure we haven't tasted the best that McCormick's Garlic and Onion plus Black Pepper and Sea Salt has to offer!
