FIT TIP: DON'T FORGET BACK DAY!
by Kat Cezair, ISSA CPT
The back is probably one of my favorite muscle groups to train! Although you see it the least, having a strong back is important and completely transforms your physique and overall strength!
First and foremost, your back contains your spine which is obviously an important component to our body’s makeup. Not only does it influence posture, but connected to the spine are flexor and extensor muscles that work together to stabilize the spine as we go through various movements like bending, standing, and lifting. When the back muscles are weak or undertrained, the shoulders tend to take on extra stress and round forward causing the rest of your upper body to hunch, which leads to overall poor posture, improper movement patterns, and neck/back/shoulder pains.
Training back also balances out your body. Many people spend a lot of their fitness time doing front of the body exercises like bench presses, pushups, and crunches. Of course, because we can see what we’re working. But placing the focus on the front of the body makes your anterior(front) muscles overactive and the posterior (back) muscles start pulling and overstretching. You want to make sure you’re keeping things even! An easy way to do this is simply by matching the number of back exercises/workouts you do to the number of chest exercises/ workouts you do! A balanced physique is a better physique!
Last but not least, training back gives your aesthetic an edge! I mean think about it, who doesn’t like to see some sexy back muscles? (Especially on girls am I right or am I right). Beyond their beautiful chiseled appearence, a strong wide back creates the illusion of a small waist and who doesn’t want that?!
So…..DON’t SKIP BACK DAY!
